Does Your LCD Have the Color of the Year?

Why Pantone and Calman Certifications Matter

Pantone 16-1546 Living Coral

Did you know 2019 has an official color?
It’s Pantone 16-1546 TPX.
Otherwise known as “Living Coral.”
Every year, the Pantone Color Institute selects a color to “reflect the current cultural climate.” The 2019 color of the year is Living Coral, “an optimistic, energetic shade.”

That’s from the official announcement from the Pantone Color Institute. In 1963, Pantone shook up the printing industry with their Pantone Matching System, to create a global standard for color reproduction. The tool organizes color standards through a proprietary numbering system and a palette of color chips which have become iconic to the Pantone brand. Pantone’s gamut is made up of more than 10,000 color standards, covering everything to printing, plastics, paints and pants. Makers of movie posters, action figures, wall paint and textiles use the Pantone system to ensure brand colors remain true across score of products. Even lipstick and eye shadow follow Pantone standards.

“PANTONE 16-1546 Living Coral emits the desired, familiar, and energizing aspects of color found in nature. In its glorious, yet unfortunately more elusive, display beneath the sea, this vivifying and effervescent color mesmerizes the eye and mind. Lying at the center of our naturally vivid and chromatic ecosystem, PANTONE Living Coral is evocative of how coral reefs provide shelter to a diverse kaleidoscope of color.”

Pantone speaks a universal language of color that enables designers, producers, brands, and manufacturers to make color-critical decisions through every stage of the workflow for everything from graphic design to 4K video production.

Pantone Validation

“Pantone Validated” brings their color standards to electronic devices. Computer monitors, high definition televisions and projectors are judged by how well they reproduce the Pantone Matching Colors, or PMS requirements. Professionals who consider color fidelity a mission-critical component in displays or output devices seek models evaluated and approved by Pantone, and that are identified by the Pantone Validated logo.

Portrait Displays, with headquarters in Pleasanton, CA, is a global company that provides CalMAN color calibration software, the Hollywood colorist’s standard. CalMAN is the display calibration solution chosen by nearly every video calibrator, and by most professionals in broadcast, production, and post-production. It is also the most popular solution for home theatre professional installers and enthusiasts.

The “Verified by CalMAN” program ensures each display to be accurate out of the box and true to multiple industry-standard color gamuts. As Pantone is the reigning standard for surface color control, CalMAN sits on the Iron Throne of digital imaging.

In the Verified by CalMAN program, displays are brought into the color lab at Portrait Displays and put through a rigorous testing process to determine each display’s performance. Only those displays that meet the program’s specifications for color accuracy can wear the Verified by CalMAN mark.

In January 2019, BenQ became the first display manufacturer in the world to become Verified by CalMAN. That means BenQ displays met the Portrait Displays lab testing for true, accurate colors and color gamut measurements.

The Verified by CalMAN certification ensures each BenQ display is accurate out-of-the-box and true to multiple industry-standard color gamuts.
