Enjoy sharp details with 4K UHD

What's the difference between a 4K and a Full HD projector?

Compared with conventional Full HD projectors (1920 x 1080 pixels), 4K UHD projectors (3840 x 2160 pixels) offer four times the resolution. Our BenQ 4K projectors put clear, richly detailed pictures on your screen, bringing even the finest textures and subtle nuances to life. They're designed for daylight and dark rooms alike, so they perform brilliantly in any lighting. Even in a bright room, you get crisp images and vivid colour. If you want premium quality and an unrivalled cinema experience, a 4K projector is the obvious choice.

Which projector has the best picture quality?

Experience home cinema in a new dimension with BenQ 4K projectors and cutting-edge technology. DLP technology gives you precise pixel control and razor-sharp images full of detail. HDR brings more vivid colours and stronger contrast: dark scenes look more realistic and highlights glow more intensely, turning every film into a visual treat. With our CinematicColor technology, you see colours exactly as the director intended. Precise calibration and a wide colour gamut make images look completely natural, just like at the cinema.

BenQ’s natural Auto HDR color rendering technology reproduces the impressive quality of 4K HDR images with truly lifelike color performance.

4 Steps to Find the Perfect 4K Projector

There's a huge choice of 4K projectors online, with all kinds of features. The right one for you depends on your room size, where you'll place it, your lighting conditions and how you'll use it. So which 4K projector suits you and your home? Here are the four key things to consider before you buy a 4K home cinema projector.

Step 1: Screen and room size

For a true cinema feel, we recommend a picture size of 100 inches or more. But to keep the image sharp, it isn't just the screen diagonal that counts when you set up a projector. The distance to the screen matters too, so make sure you factor your room size into your plans.

In larger rooms, a standard projector can produce a 100-inch picture from 2.5 to 4 metres away, while in small to medium-sized rooms the distance is usually 1.5 to 2.5 metres. Ultra-short-throw projectors, such as our Laser TV range, can project a picture of up to 120 inches from just a few centimetres away from the screen.

BenQ Projector Buying Guide: Step 1
Small rooms

Small rooms
Less than 2.5 m from the screen

Large rooms

Large rooms
2.5–4.0 m from the screen

The range of projectors may look daunting at first, but it means you can tailor your 4K projector to your home and your own idea of a real home cinema. Take the W2720i as an example: to get a 100-inch picture, place this 4K HDR projector 2.5 metres from your screen or wall.

BenQ Projector Buying Guide: Step 2

Step 2: Installation

Where's the best place for your 4K projector? Is a ceiling mount the better option, or can it sit on a table? Think about how you want to use it, then decide whether a ceiling mount or a tabletop setup suits you best.

Positioning matters too. If the projector can't sit centrally in front of the screen and has to be off to one side, look for a model with keystone correction or lens shift.

Keystone correction compensates for the trapezoid effect that appears when a projector isn't square to the screen. Lens shift lets you move the image without distortion and without moving the projector itself. Either way, you get an excellent picture almost wherever you place it, with no loss of quality.

Fixed installation

Mount these projectors permanently on the ceiling.

Flexible placement

These projectors can go on the ceiling or on a piece of furniture.

Step 3: Lighting conditions

Will you use your projector in a bright, sunlit room, or only in the dark? Choose your UHD projector accordingly. Brightness, measured in ANSI lumens, is the key figure for getting brilliant pictures with the best colour and contrast on screen. If you usually darken the room, choose a model of around 2,000 ANSI lumens to enjoy deep blacks and rich contrast. If there's plenty of ambient light and you want to use your projector during the day, we recommend a 4K projector with 3,000 ANSI lumens or more.

Daylight

The room isn't darkened, or only slightly. There is ambient light present.

Darkness

For the best cinema feel, darken the room as you would a movie theatre.

Step 4: How you'll use it

Of course, you won't choose your ideal home cinema projector on room conditions and lighting alone. You'll want one that's built for exactly the way you'll use it. So make sure your projector has the features that matter to you, whether it's for a dedicated cinema room or everyday viewing. BenQ 4K projectors offer different picture modes, for example, so one model can serve a variety of purposes with optimal settings for each.

FAQ: 4K Projectors

  • What are the benefits of a 4K projector?
  • Above all, a 4K projector gives you ultra-high-resolution pictures with four times the detail of Full HD. That means crystal-clear sharpness even on very large screens, more depth and realism from finer detail, and a better viewing experience for films, sport and gaming. It's also a future-proof choice, as more and more content is available in 4K. In short, a 4K projector brings real cinema atmosphere into your home: razor-sharp, strikingly realistic and visually breathtaking.
  • What's the difference between BenQ's W series and T series?
  • The right model range depends largely on the lighting in your room. The W series is designed for dedicated, darkened home cinema rooms, with a focus on maximum colour accuracy and high contrast. The T series and TK models, by contrast, are true all-rounders for brighter rooms. With high brightness, often over 3,000 ANSI lumens, the picture stays punchy and doesn't wash out in daylight or ambient light.
  • What do CinematicColor and Rec. 709 mean?
  • Colour is subjective, so to experience films exactly as the filmmakers intended in the studio, you need standards. Rec. 709 is the standard colour space for regular TV content and Blu-rays. BenQ calibrates its home cinema projectors with its in-house CinematicColor technology to cover as close to 100% of this colour space as possible, or of the wider DCI-P3 cinema standard, for natural colours without artificial oversaturation.
  • Why is it worth switching to a 4K laser projector or Laser TV?
  • Modern 4K laser projectors with ultra-short-throw technology are increasingly replacing bulky traditional TVs. They create a giant 100- to 150-inch picture from just a few centimetres away from the wall, so there's no need for heavy ceiling mounts or long cable runs. Modern laser and 4LED light sources also last up to 20,000 hours, which means years of use with no replacement-lamp costs.
  • Is a 4K projector worth it?
  • It depends on how you'll use it, but in many cases the answer is yes. A 4K projector is perfect if picture quality matters to you. Which BenQ model is right for you depends on the factors covered above. Are you looking for a TV replacement, a daylight projector for live sport, or a classic home cinema projector for a darkened room? Your room size needs to suit the balance between screen size and throw distance. Where and how you position the projector also shapes your home cinema setup, and your lighting conditions ultimately decide how bright your 4K projector needs to be. With the different picture modes, you can fine-tune your projector for the way you use it.
  • What is a true 4K projector?
  • According to the Consumer Technology Association, a true 4K UHD projector must project at least 8.3 million distinct pixels onto the screen. That equals a resolution of 3840 x 2160 pixels and delivers four times the detail of conventional Full HD. Only when the full pixel count is reached can a device be called a true 4K projector.
  • Which connections should a modern home cinema projector have?
  • For a future-proof setup, look for modern HDMI 2.0b or HDMI 2.1 ports, which matter for 4K content from Blu-ray players or next-gen consoles. An eARC port also lets you send high-resolution audio formats straight to an external soundbar. And a USB-C port with Power Delivery lets you connect and charge mobile devices with a single cable.
  • Are 4K projectors good for gaming?
  • BenQ's gaming projectors have dedicated gaming modes for different genres and extremely low input lag. At a high refresh rate, latency is as low as 4 milliseconds, and at full 4K at 60 Hz it's around 16 milliseconds. Movement on your console or PC feels completely lag-free and fluid.
