Studio MUX Creates ColourLab with BenQ BR9708 Projector for an Immersive Digital Graffiti Experience
Overview
The Challenge

Studio MUX wanted to design a space that would go beyond passive, sometimes dull visuals displayed during events and invite visitors to actively participate. Their idea was to create a room where walls and floors became a canvas for digital graffiti, giving visitors a thrilling chance to “spray” and interact with colours. For this to happen, they needed a projection solution capable of accurately reproducing a wide spectrum of vibrant colours, and reducing interference from ambient light.

The Solution

They found the ideal solution in BenQ’s projection technologies and services. The BenQ BR9708 projector was chosen as it could reproduce every visual element, from subtle tones to bold sprays, with precision and consistency. Other challenges of the project were also addressed by BenQ’s professional Projection Services, including 3D planning and attentive technical support throughout the project.

The Result

In the end, they were able to successfully bring their ColourLab vision to life. By tackling every challenge, they built an immersive digital graffiti space. Visitors were not just observers but active creators who could engage and explore their creativity. They could paint vibrant artworks on the walls and floor and stay as close as ever to the intersection where technology and creativity converge.

Project

Studio MUX set out to metamorphose creative expression into an interactive experience using their LightSpray technology. Leveraging BenQ’s advanced projection technologies, they created ColourLab at a world-famous event; an engaging digital graffiti space where visitors could freely express their creativity through vibrant colours.

About Studio MUX

Studio MUX connects content, technology, and people to create multisensory experiences, developing innovative formats that make content truly tangible for end users – from the first touchpoint to the last impression. With their LightSpray technology – an innovative digital graffiti solution compatible with all display devices – they transform any surface into an interactive canvas for graffiti art, making "every event shine".

With LightSpray, users can create graffiti digitally using a SprayCan interface and experience the same excitement as physical street graffiti. They can also directly download their graffiti work to their smartphones, as all artworks are collected in an online gallery. Studio MUX uses this technology to bring experiential moments, interaction, and urban art aesthetics to business and cultural events.

An Interactive Concept Built on Creative Freedom

As events become more interactive and experience-based, the studio envisioned a digital graffiti canvas that encouraged engagement through self-expression during events. Rather than simply showcasing visuals, ColourLab was supposed to let visitors liberate their imaginations and become part of the experience.

Graffiti, by nature, evokes a profound sense of freedom, discovery, and deep satisfaction. By blending art with technology, Studio MUX created ColourLab based on the digital graffiti concept. It not only offered the same sense of pleasure and vibrant energy but was also clean and flexible, making it ideal for indoor spaces.

Visitors could experiment with colours, engage with content, and momentarily step away from conventional boundaries. No strong smell of paint or unwanted stains were present in the booth; therefore, the installation remained neat, eco-friendly, and cleanup-free.

Overcoming Challenges with BenQ Projection Solutions and Services

As the concept developed, it became clear that visual impression and colour precision were central to the experience. After consulting the BenQ projection team, the studio found the BenQ BR9708 4K simulation projector essential for success. This model can produce perfectly colour-matched visuals with the required colour fidelity and reliability, allowing the visuals in ColourLab to appear vibrant and true to life, just as intended.

The team recommended this model because it features 4K resolution for ultra-fine details even at short viewing distances. It uses an RGBRGB colour wheel for superior colour saturation and accuracy. It also includes factory WRGBCMY calibration across multiple projectors.

This greatly reduces manual calibration work and can save up to one full day during setup in large installations. It also ensures seamless multi-projector alignment for edge-blending. Since the digital graffiti had to flow from wall to wall, the installation needed a CAVE setup. By keeping accurately reproduced colours consistent on all four projectors, the BR9708 could evidently create natural and immersive interactions.

On the other hand, and beyond the hardware, BenQ supported the project through Projection Services to address potential challenges. The BenQ projection experts offered 3D planning services to visualise the setup before execution, making it easier for Studio MUX to envision the space and, in doing so, refine ideas, set realistic expectations, and reduce risks. For instance, they could anticipate the impact of ambient light, which could significantly jeopardise the project by reducing contrast and affecting visual clarity.

The BenQ team carefully controlled the installation space and optimised the setup to ensure stable, high-quality output. The teams also worked closely together during testing and setup to achieve the best possible performance.

“The outcome is wonderful. We are thrilled to provide a canvas for digital graffiti that maintains a perfect balance of technology and entertainment. Thanks to the colour brilliance of the BR9708, visitors can be truly immersed while liberating their imagination.”

Outcome

The success of ColourLab would not have been possible without a close collaboration between Studio MUX and BenQ. While Studio MUX led LightSpray integration and installation, BenQ contributed technical expertise, the BR9708 4K simulation projection solution, and ongoing support throughout the project.

The result of this collaborative approach was a seamless integration of hardware, software, and content, leading to the creation of an intriguing hub for urban creativity and interaction. Visitors could engage with the brand, create, and share, making each interaction unique and memorable. ColourLab demonstrated how technical precision and creative vision can come together to bring digital graffiti into mainstream consciousness.
