TAIPEI, TAIWAN, June 20, 2019 – BenQ, the global No.1 DLP projector brand, announced today that all of its products are already wholly compliant with the United Nations’ Minamata Convention on Mercury. BenQ’s full support of the Minamata Convention includes its range of lamp-based projectors, which are exempt, and its line of LED and laser light source-based models, which contain no mercury.

“BenQ is committed to fulfilling our corporate responsibility to the environment and providing the most advanced, energy-efficient product designs and technology,” said Conway Lee, President of BenQ Corporation. “We are bringing our customers the best product experience and smart choices with lamp-based as well as mercury-free LED and laser projectors, all in complete compliance with the Minamata Convention.”

An international treaty aimed at protecting human health and the environment from harmful effects of mercury, the Minamata Convention was ratified by over 100 countries of the United Nations in 2013, and went into effect in 2017. Targeting fluorescent lamps and high-pressure mercury lamps used in general lighting, the treaty prohibits mercury from being used in these products by 2020.

Specialty lighting lamps other than cold cathode fluorescent lamps (CCFLs) and eternal electrode fluorescent lamps (EEFLs) for electronic displays are excluded from the Minamata Convention, meaning that high-intensity discharge projector lamps are not restricted by the treaty, and all BenQ lamp-based projectors may continue to be sold and used without limitations.

Furthermore, futureproof BenQ projectors with LED and BlueCore laser light sources are available for a wide spectrum of applications ranging from portable home entertainment and general office use to conference room and large-venue installation purposes. BenQ LED and laser projectors contain no mercury at all, demonstrating BenQ’s consummate corporate social responsibility, customer-centric product choices, and dedication to preserving the environment.

Powered by ultimately durable Digital Light Processing, the 2015 Academy Award of Merit Oscar® winning technology used in 90% of the world’s digital cinemas, BenQ projectors deliver long-lasting DLP picture quality with precise colors and razor-sharp clarity coupled with efficient lamp-based, maintenance-free LED, or powerful BlueCore laser light sources.
